Autumn is the busiest time of year for our gutter cleaning team — and with good reason. As the last leaves fall and winter approaches, gutters that have been accumulating debris all year reach their limit. Here is a complete autumn checklist for protecting your property before winter sets in.
Why autumn matters for gutters
Leaves are the primary culprit. A single large tree can drop thousands of leaves, many of which end up in nearby gutters. Mixed with the general debris of moss, roof grit, and bird matter that has accumulated through the year, this creates dense blockages that stop water flowing.
When gutters block in winter, there are two distinct risks:
- Overflow in heavy rain — water goes over the front edge of the gutter and down the wall, causing damp penetration
- Ice expansion — water sitting in blocked gutters freezes and expands, cracking or displacing the gutter and potentially the fascia board behind it
The autumn property checklist
Gutters and downpipes - Clear all gutters of leaves, moss, and debris - Flush all downpipes to confirm free flow - Check for cracks, splits, or leaking joints - Check fascia boards for signs of water damage or rot
Roof and chimney - Check for dislodged or missing tiles from ground level - Clear any moss growth from roof surfaces if present - Check chimney pointing for gaps
Windows and frames - Check window seals for gaps or deterioration — a damp winter will expose any weak points - Clean windows before the short winter days begin
Drains - Clear leaves from external drain grilles - Check manholes are clear of debris
Exterior walls - Look for staining below gutterlines that suggests existing overflow - Check air bricks are clear of leaf debris
Book early
Autumn gutter cleaning is our busiest period. If you want your gutters cleared before the worst of the winter weather, book in September or October — by November, schedules fill quickly. We take before and after photos on every visit as standard.
